Set in Shoreditch, in the heart of East London, the Brick Lane area is a bustling throng of markets, street vendors and trendy boutiques.  The streets of Brick Lane are filled with galleries, restaurants and markets and are ever popular with London’s fashionable and artistic crowds. Time Out says Brick Lane Market is where Eastern promise meets East End chaos, and they’re not wrong! The market spreads out along Brick Lane and spills onto the side streets, so make sure you explore all of the roads off Brick Lane too which are filled with lots of chic independent boutiques overflowing with original pieces.  At the bottom of Brick Lane there are some wonderful fabric stores selling gorgeous Indian silks. Around the middle it gets very arty and trendy as you get to the Old Truman Brewery. The Old Truman Brewery is home to some unique markets, brimming with up-and-coming designers selling a unique variety of clothes, handbags and jewellery.  As you get to the top of Brick Lane, it’s a chaotic mix of junk, bric-a-brac and other ‘collectables’.

Almost anything can be found on Brick Lane, and this is the joy of this market - you never know what treasures you’ll find; one day it could be amazing vintage leather clothes, another a fantastic piece of art deco furniture.  Plus, as many of the markets are inside, you don’t have to worry about bad weather ruining your day, and you can browse to your heart’s content in the shelter of the Old Truman Brewery.

Sunday Upmarket - Sundays 10am-5pm / The Old Truman Brewery, Ely's Yard (entrances on Brick Lane & Hanbury Street), London E1 6QL

Recently voted Time Out’s ‘Best Market for New Designers’, Sunday UpMarket first opened its doors in September 2004 and now hosts almost 200 stalls selling fashion, accessories, crafts, interiors and music plus a large indoor food area. UpMarket aims to support new design talent by providing a platform for designer-makers to sell direct to the public. You’ll find everything from edgy women's wear, customised men's clothing, high fashion, and beautifully tailored children's clothes to handmade jewellery.

Backyard Market - Sat 11am-6pm; Sun 10am-5pm / The Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL

This market focuses on the arts and crafts and now houses almost 100 stalls from young edgy fashion, jewellery and accessories designers, wholesome homemade food and other ‘backyard treasures’.  The unit in the Old Truman Brewery is 8000sqft of open plan space that opens onto Brick Lane.

The Vintage Market - Fri & Sat 11am-6pm; Sun 10am-5pm / The Old Truman Brewery, F Block T2, 85 Brick Lane, London E1

This weekly market has a variety of well organised stalls peppered with vintage accessories, glam fur coats and cheap men’s suits.  Vintage specialists from the UK and abroad bring together a range of clothing and accessories for men and women from 1920s to 1990s. Whether it’s glam fur coats, feather capes, vintage bridal wear, men’s suits or distinctive accessories, there are bound to be some exciting discoveries to be made.

The Tea Rooms - Sat 11am-6pm; Sun 10am-5pm / Next to 146 Brick Lane

The former tea rooms of the Old Truman Brewery is transformed into an eclectic market full of items for your home.  It is a haven of reasonably priced furniture antiques, collectables, homeware and handmade soft furnishings, haberdashery and ceramics.

Hanbury Hall Vintage Market - Sat & Sun 11am-6pm / 22 Hanbury Street, London E1 6QR

Hanbury Hall is located just opposite the side entrance to the Old Truman Brewery’s UpMarket off Brick Lane.  The atmosphere is very relaxed, with the hall itself not dissimilar to a local village hall, with a collection of stall holders all selling their vintage wares, from clothes, accessories to furniture.

info

We thought you might find these tips helpful:

Timings
Saturdays and Sundays are the days to visit. Most stalls are up and running by 11am.

Security
Thousands of people visit the Market so it can get extremely busy. Make sure you keep an eye on your belongings.

Cashpoints
Some of the traders do have credit card machines, but most only accept cash. We suggest getting cash before you get to the Market as cashpoints are limited and always have huge queues. If you need a cashpoint, you can find one at:
- Barclays, Spitalfields Market: 99-101, Commercial Street, London E1 6DE
- The BestOne convenience store (there is a charge): 20 Brick Lane, London E1 6RF

Toilets
The all important question – where to find a loo! There is a shortage of public loos on Brick Lane itself. There are 2 portaloos on Brick Lane near the junction of Woodseer St but these get grotty quickly! There are numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants where you can use the loo if you are a patron. If not, there are signed public loos in the Old Truman Brewery - at UpMarket, the loos are upstairs.
