Address: Portobello Road, London W10 & W11

One of the most famous street markets in the world, Portobello Road is a popular destination for Londoners, tourists and celebrities alike. Portobello is colourful, vibrant hub with hundreds of stalls, selling everything from secondhand wonders such as books and other bric-a-brac, vintage boots and clothing, to new, edgy fashion creations by up and coming designers, antiques and fresh food. Most people don't realise that it is actually made up of different markets. The main market day takes place every Saturday - although there are also stalls from Monday to Friday. Its location in the prestigious Notting Hill landscape provides the perfect backdrop for one of London’s most original and inspiring shopping destinations. This really is the place to shop and eat and then shop (and eat) some more.

Portobello Road
Portobello Market takes up most of what is actually more properly called Portobello Road. The stalls run for about 2 miles, the full length of Portobello Road, from Notting Hill Gate tube (mainly antiques and bric a brac), along the middle of Portobello Road (mainly food stalls and street eats), and up to the northern end of the Road where you’ll find vintage, second hand and retro clothing and accessories.

Portobello Green & the Westway
Open Friday to Sunday, this popular area of the Market houses a multitude of jewellery and accessories designers. You’ll find it just before the huge Westway canopy. The Westway is a passageway with stalls either side, and a concrete flyover above your head which is the motorway into central London. This area combined with the stalls under the canopy alongside is known as the Fashion Market. As you walk along the Westway you’ll find a host of new designers showcasing their fashion and accessory creations. This is where you’ll get something really unique. Under the canopy alongside the Westway sit more vintage stalls as well as a few more independent designers.

Golborne Road
This six day market hosts secondhand items and bric a brac on Fridays and Saturdays. Throughout the week, you will be pushed for choice with the hot food vendors, fruit and veg and other household stalls.

How to get to portobello market

By Tube, the best way of all... Ladbroke Grove, on Hammersmith & City line – takes you opposite the start of Portobello’s Fashion Market under the Westway. Or Notting Hill Gate, on District, Circle or Central lines – just follow the crowds, the Market is 5 minutes walk from the tube. You'll get to the antiques/food stalls before you get to the fashion.

By Bus...buses include: 7, 12, 23, 27, 28, 31, 52, 70 & 328. Ask the driver to let you know when to get off!

By Car...Parking is tricky as it is mostly resident bays and the limited meter bays get very busy. On Saturdays after 1.30pm or all day Sunday, you can park in meter bays or on a single yellow line for free. Monday to Friday, parking restrictions apply.

PLAN YOUR JOURNEY

info

We thought you might find these tips helpful:

Timings
If you can, we suggest going in the morning, around 10am, as by the afternoon it gets extremely crowded.  Stall opening times can vary with the weather, so don't be surprised if they pack up early if it's pouring, or stay late in the evening sunshine.

Security
Thousands of people visit the Market on a Saturday so it can get extremely busy. Make sure you keep an eye on your belongings.

Cashpoints
Some of the traders do have credit card machines, but most only accept cash. We suggest getting cash before you get to the Market as cashpoints are limited and always have huge queues. If you need a cashpoint, you can find one at:
- Barclays: 137 Ladbroke Grove, before the Tube station at the junction of Lancaster Road
- Santander: 174 Portobello Road opposite the Electric Brasserie

Toilets
The all important question – where to find a loo! Obviously there are numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants you can use if you are a patron. If not, there are public loos where:
- Portobello Road meets Lonsdale Road
- Portobello Road meets Tavistock Place
