Address: Brushfield Street, London E1 6DT

Spitalfields is made up of the Old and New Market after extensive renovation transformed the area, so the East End institution now comprises the refurbished 1887 covered market and the adjacent modern shopping precinct. Spitalfields is one of the crown jewels of East London and is working hard to steal Portobello’s sparkle as London’s favourite market shopping destination...and it’s no wonder! Firmly established as a ‘must visit’ London attraction, this market offers a fusion of Victorian splendor and contemporary architecture, bringing together some fantastic restaurants, shops and an array of themed market days. With cutting edge fashion, jewellery and accessories, vintage, original artworks and delicious food from around the world, this is one hot-spot you don’t want to miss.

The beauty of Spitalfields is that it is a covered market, so you won't get wet when it rains (as it often does in the UK!). That said, the market is not inside, it’s under a huge glass canopy, so as the sides are open to the elements, make sure you wrap up warm in chillier weather.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it’s time to look for a bite to eat. You can buy fresh bread and cakes, pies and pasties, organic vegetables, and meat to take home, or you can eat at one of the many restaurants and cafeterias which serve food from all over the world - Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai, and Indonesian, to name but a few. These are generally reasonably priced and well patronized by city workers, so you may find you have to queue at lunchtime. Check out our Where to Eat guide for more information.

Old Spitalfields Market
The Old Market is one of London’s oldest Victorian market halls. Easy to find, Old Spitalfields Market is a short walk from both Liverpool Street and Aldgate East stations. A totally cool shopping and eating experience, the stalls in the old covered market are the place to find something original, of excellent quality and value for money.

Spitalfields Traders Market
This is situated in the newly renovated part of Spitalfields underneath the glass canopy in the more 'precincty' area, and is right next door to Old Spitalfields Market. It has over 100 stalls on its busiest days. The market is also surrounded by a host of independent boutiques, food shops and restaurants.

Opening Times explained
Spitalfields is now a seven-days-a-week destination. Each day hosts a different type of market. Sunday is the busiest day, with over 200 stalls operating, including a specialist organic market.  Sundays offer a bit of everything – from food to fashion, from antiques and art, to bric a brac and vintage.

On weekdays between 11am and 4pm the markets varied stalls are quieter, except at lunchtime, when the great choice of eating places attracts the young City workers. Thursday is the best day for antiques. Friday is best for art and fashion, where over 50 young designers showcase their work at the Fashion Market. On the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, a record fair joins the market.  Previously closed on Saturdays, the new Saturday Market takes place inside the covered market hall and is open between 11am and 5pm. Old Spitalfields Market has lined up four distinctive markets on a Saturday which will rotate on a regular weekly basis:

Judy’s Affordable Vintage
1st Saturday of every month. All 150 stalls are filled with vintage, retro and reworked items, from fashion to haberdashery to showcase the best of British vintage.

Old Spitalfields Traders
The 2nd Saturday of every month will feature the best of Spitalfields usual market week with a wide array of goods, from fashion, accessories, jewellery, furniture, art, collectables and a fabulous collection of mouth-watering fresh produce on offer.

Designers / Makers Market
3rd Saturday of every month. Featuring a wide variety of crafts, including ceramics, fashion, art, furniture and jewellery.

Antiques and Collectors Flea Market
Thursday’s antiques market will make an additional appearance on the 4th Saturday of every month.

PLAN YOUR JOURNEY

info

We thought you might find these tips helpful:

Timings
The Markets are open 7 days a week, but if you are after something specific make sure you check out the info above as different days have different themes. If you're after a bit of everything, Sunday is the day to go.

Security
Thousands of people visit the Markets so it can get extremely busy. Make sure you keep an eye on your belongings.

Cashpoints
Some of the traders do have credit card machines, but most only accept cash. We suggest getting cash before you get to the Market as cashpoints are limited and always have huge queues. If you need a cashpoint, you can find one at:
- Barclays: 99 Commercial Street, E1 6BG just opposite the black gates of the new part of the Market
- NatWest: next to Giraffe restaurant inside the Market
- Infocash (chargeable): by Wollstonecraft Gate Walkway inside the Market

Toilets
The all important question – where to find a loo! There are public loos next to Wagamamas near the Wollstonecraft Walkway. Or there are numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants where you can use the loos if you are a patron!
